December 2021 marks the beginning of the third decade of Etafeni’s existence. For the past twenty years, Etafeni (At the Open Space), has been not only a sanctuary of care, comfort and compassion but also an institution of human development and restoration of dignity. The Trust has, since its inception, journeyed with the people of Nyanga and the surrounding areas through three devastating pandemics: poverty, HIV and AIDS, and the coronavirus (Covid-19).
The story of Etafeni is not only of an institution that has survived two difficult decades of walking side by side with the underprivileged and marginalised, it is a wonderful story of a community that came together during these painful moments, with others, for others. It is a story about magnanimity, selflessness, the pursuit of the common good and the endeavour to restore human dignity. It is a story illustrative of the words, ‘We need each other and our diversity of gifts to make life whole’. Etafeni is a story of the remarkable resilience of a community.
